Elective Classes

Current 2017 Electives – Subject to Change

  • Archery – (3) – An entry-level basics course on archery safety and techniques as described by AIMS (Archery in Mississippi Schools), sponsored by the MS Department of Wildlife, Fisheries, and Parks.
  • Dance – (3) – (Beginner/Intermediate) – This class is offered for students who are interested in learning the basic techniques involved in dance. Students will learn a routine that will be performed during camp. No equipment is necessary.
  • Marching Percussion – (2) – A class for percussionists wishing to learn the style required to be in a marching band battery. Marching snare sticks are required. A drum pad and stand are preferred.
  • Mallet Percussion – A class for percussionists and other band members wishing to learn mallet percussion techniques.
  • Drum Set – Introduction to basic drum set fundamentals and different styles of music.
  • Art
  • Jazz Band – (Only saxophones, trumpets, trombones, drum set, piano, and guitars) Designed to introduce campers to the foundations of jazz music and performance.
  • Jazz Band Techniques – (Open to all instruments) Learn a variety of techniques to jump start playing in Jazz band at your school.  Skills covered will be Jazz articulations and releases, playing in swing style, common jazz rhythms, building jazz chords, blues scales, and improvising a solo in a blues chord progression.
  • Musicianship – (2) – For students wishing to improve their general musical knowledge. It will include music theory, scales, and rhythm reinforcement.
  • Garage Band – (3) – (Beginner/Intermediate)– A computer lab based class that will involve learning the basics of the basic music production software “Garage Band.” Enrollment is limited.
  • Color Guard – (3) – (Beginner/Intermediate) – This class is offered for students who are interested in learning the basic techniques involved in auditioning for color guard in the future. Students will learn a routine that will be performed during camp. We will provide a flag for you.
  • Marching Techniques – (2) – Learn the basic fundamentals of marching band including correct posture, breathing, moving at a steady tempo while learning the basics of marching band to prepare you for high school. Correct style tennis shoes are required.
  • Drum Major Conducting – This class will go over the basic conducting patterns, learn and create your own salute, commands, and leadership skills. You will not only conduct better, but spark a fire of leadership in your band programs at home.
